The cultural dimension of the European Green Deal

Climate change and environmental degradation are an existential threat to Europe and the world

Europe needs a new growth strategy that will transform the Union into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy, where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050; economic growth is decoupled from resource use; and no person and no place is left behind

Background

Dialectical thinking refers to the ability to view issues from multiple perspectives and to arrive at the most economical and reasonable reconciliation of seemingly contradictory information and postures.

The New European Bauhaus idea is a brand, with a goal to reform, renew, restore, renovate the European built environment in a democratic way.

  • Industrial design, art and technology, society and culture combine in an experimental, unconventional, imaginative, engaging, dialectical and multidiciplinary approach to the crisis of our time.

  • For wood, we need to go beyond building, beyond products, beyond technology, and co- create proposals for pilot projects and policies, including both practice and theory.

  • Bauhaus thinking is anthropological, relating to human progress, human crafts and workshops: from consumers to doers.

  • What can we do for our society with the practice and theory of wood in the European urban and rural culture?

Contradictions to reconcile

  • Is the grand project of modernity a global failure?

  • Traditional communality (cultural) versus modern production and lifestyles (technical)

  • Economic and social progress (values) versus climate and natural resources (science)

  • Goal to create solutions to protect resources, environmental resilience, urban ecology remediation, decarbonisation, climate change mitigation and adaptation versus human needs for health, security, responsibility, quality of life, human rights, equal opportunities (politics)

  • Urban growth and consumption versus rural production landscape

  • The goal of sustainability is social transformation: The transformation of the environment changes the human society that drives the change.
